Mar 14:32
Gethsemane was no party. It was not a place of refreshing for our Lord. Our Savior really suffered there.
Suffering alone is a tragedy. Peter had just affirmed that he would never deny him :29-31. Jesus took Peter, James, and John aside and told them of his intense sorrow, saying, "My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch." Our Lord then went farther into the garden and prayed while His disciples slept. Sad to say, but His own disciple, Judas, had gone out and betrayed Him :41-45.
Our Lord Prayed for Deliverance. He Prayed about possibility :35, 36. If there was a possibility to accomplish the Father's will in some other way, He wanted to do that. Some might argue that He, because of His deity, would have never prayed that way. We must remember, however, that He did not suffer in His deity, but that He suffered in the flesh. There was a near fatality :34. His soul was exceeding sorrowful unto death. To shrink from physical death would be weaker than martyrs and evil heroes. Our Lord was not weak. From what then did He seek deliverance :36 He wished to be delivered, if possible, from our sorrows (Isa. 53:3, 4), from becoming sin, from being made a curse, Satanic attack (Luk_4:13) Luke 22:43, from the horror of great darkness, and all the terrors of God.
Please note some concluding thoughts. Christ Was Triumphant. He was triumphant in resolve to do what He came to earth to do :42. He was triumphant when He went out and met Judas saying unto him, "Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?" Luke 22:48. He was triumphant when He met those who had come to take Him into custody. He asked "Whom seek ye" and when they answered, "Jesus of Nazareth" He replied, "I am he." John 18:4, 5.
In your hour of trial, you have a Savior. Be thankful for that, and remember that Christ had none. Search your own heart. What Opportunities Have You Slept Through?
