Mat 6:33 But seek ye
first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all
these things shall be added unto you.
Our Lord forbids an inordinate
amount of care. In verse 31 He tells us not to think about what we shall
eat or drink, nor what we shall wear. He does not mean that we are to
give those things no thought, but that we are not to be controlled by such
thought. Rather we are to turn that care into work. 2
Thess. 3:10. " For even
when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work,
neither should he eat." In this country we need to learn again the
time honored responsibility that men should work and feed their bodies by the
works of their labor. We are not to despair, but rather we are to seek the
Lord :33. He encourages us with the fact that He already knows our
needs :32
He encourages us to think. That is turn our thoughts to seeking the Lord. He and His righteousness are to be our first concern. We must know that we cannot covet money and serve God at the same time. See verses 24, 25. In verses 26-30 we are taught to think beyond physical limitations. Know that he feeds the birds, He clothes the lilies and the grass, and with this He assures us that He will also clothe us. Our thoughts should be pure thoughts. See in Phil. 4:8 some of the things on which we should think: things that are true, things that are honest, things that are just, things that are pure, things that are lovely, and things that are of good report .
Consider our Instructions. Let us care more for the clothing of righteousness 1 Pet. 3:3, "Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. Remember that God promises that if we seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness that all these other things will be added to us :33. Let us not forget that His compassions are new to us every day, Lam. 3:22, 23, "It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
