MORE ON GOD'S KINGDOM

The promise of the land coupled with a Godly seed, God gave not only to Abraham. He confirmed it also to Isaac, Abraham's son and also to Jacob, Isaac's son.  In this genealogy  God was already setting up the line through which the human king over this world would come.  This Jacob called his sons together to tell them what would happen in the last days, Gen. 49:1.  In that discourse he singled out Judah and said of him "...The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.  Thus Judah was set as the royal tribe from which God's King should come.  Jacob went down into Egypt seeking corn and dwelt there in the land of Goshen until his death.  When the brethren would seek forgiveness from Joseph for the way they had treated him, Joseph comforted them.  When he was 110 years old he died.  Before his death, however, he said unto his brethren "...I die; and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob."  Thus Joseph confirmed the covenant God made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
A man of the tribe of Levi married, and God gave them a son whom they named Moses.  Moses could not be that king for he was not of the tribe of Judah.  His tribe, Levi, was the priestly tribe.  God protected him and prepared him to be the one who would lead the children of Israel out of Egypt.  Has God been defeated in His purpose to have man rule on the earth?  Not at all.  He is working His plan.  When they were out of Egypt, God constituted this family of Israel as a nation and gave them the 10 commandment along with all the statutes and judgments as their constitution.  Israel was established as a theocracy.  That is a nation ruled by God with Moses as His priest or mediator.
When Moses died, Israel continued with very little change.  God had prepared a man named Joshua.  At God's command, Moses put Joshua in command.  Still there was no king.
Then came the Judges one after another.  God lifted up one of the judges, named Samuel.  He was a godly man, but his sons were ungodly.  The elders knowing that came to Samuel and begged him to give them a king.  It is recorded in 1 Sam. 8:5 "And said unto him, behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways; now make us a king to judge us like all the nations."  Saul, of the tribe of Benjamin, was made king, but he did not please God.  Saul did the priest's job of offering sacrifice to God, but it was unacceptable.  Samuel, speaking for God, said to him "...now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou has not kept that which the Lord commanded thee."
Again, is God defeated?  God forbid.  He will yet work His purpose.
