Job 1:20 "Then
Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head,
and fell
down upon the ground, and worshipped, "
Job worshiped a God that had given him very much.
He had blessed him to be the greatest man of the east. Job also worshiped a God that had given him
over to be tested by the devil.
Let
us notice some circumstances under which Job worshiped. He had experienced the devil's accusation
before God. All of us Christians are so
accused before God. This man had lost
all his wealth, camels, oxen, asses, and sheep.
He lost them all. Then he lost
all 10 of his children. He had no one
left but his wife. Even his wife told
him to curse God and die.
Let
us look at his worship. His worship was
not love. Most people think of worship
as love, but it isn't. Job was
experiencing extreme grief. His grief
was so terrible that he rent his mantle and shaved his head. He worshiped with determined effort. He fell to the ground. A description of his attitude is seen in Job 13;15, "Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before
him." There was no singing, "praising,"
shouting, praying, or any of the things we commonly think of as worship. What did he do? He fell to the ground and worshiped. That is he bowed to the sovereignty of
God. His verbal response was in verse
21, "And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb and naked shall I
return thither: the LORD gave, and the
LORD hath taken away; Blessed be the name of the Lord."
When
you go to worship, go bowing to the Lordship of Christ. "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth
the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from
the dead, thou shalt be saved." Rom 10:9
